John C. Burnett, Jr., MD

Dr. Burnett is the Marriott Family Professor of Cardiovascular Research, Director of the Cardiorenal Research Laboratory and Mayo Distinguished Investigator. His research has advanced our understanding of humoral mechanisms in heart failure, hypertension and cardiometabolic disease with a specific focus on the natriuretic peptide/guanylyl cyclase/cGMP pathway. This research has led to the development of innovative therapeutics and novel diagnostics, which are currently in clinical practice and clinical trials. 

Dr. Burnett has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1986 and currently serves as a principle investigator on 4 NIH R01 grants. He has over 500 publications in leading peer review journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Circulation, Circulation Research, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Kidney International, Hypertension, Clinical Chemistry, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology and European Heart Journal. He serves on numerous journal editorial boards including Congestive Heart Failure Journal, Journal of Cardiothoracic-Renal Research, Clinical and Translational Science, Circulation Heart Failure, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Heart Failure. 

He has presented over 375 lectures at leading academic institutions throughout the world. He also served on scientific advisory boards for the Miami Heart Research Institute, Sarnoff Foundation, Bayer and the National Institutes of Health. He has been active in numerous scientific societies including the American Heart Association, Heart Failure Society of America and the American Society of Hypertension. 

he has received numerous awards and honors for his scientific contributions including the Bronte Stewart Lectureship, University of Glasgow, Winters Lecturer - Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas, Ira and Jean Balfour Lectureship, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Irwin R. Callen Memorial Lecture, Miami Heart Research Foundation, and the American Physiological Society Carl J. Wiggers Memorial Lecture. 

He is a member of the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians. Dr. Burnett holds 26 patents and has contributed to the founding of three biotechnology companies.
